چکیده

The class of D-dotted interval (D-DI) graphs is the class of intersection graphs of arithmetic progressions with jump (common difference) at most D. We consider various classical graphtheoretic optimization problems in D-DI graphs of arbitrarily, but fixed, D. We show that Maximum Independent Set, Minimum Vertex Cover, and Minimum Dominating Set can be solved in polynomial time in this graph class, answering an open question posed by Jiang (Information Processing Letters 98(1):29–33, 2006). We also show that Minimum Vertex Cover can be approximated within a factor of (1 + ε) for any ε > 0 in linear time. This algorithm generalizes to a wide class of deletion problems including the classical Minimum Feedback Vertex Set and Minimum Planar Deletion problems. Our algorithms are based on classical results in algorithmic graph theory and new structural properties of D-DI graphs that may be of independent interest.

Optimization Problems in Multiple Subtree Graphs

We study various optimization problems in t-subtree graphs, the intersection graphs of tsubtrees, where a t-subtree is the union of t disjoint subtrees of some tree. This graph class generalizes both the class of chordal graphs and the class of t-interval graphs, a generalization of interval graphs that has recently been studied from a combinatorial optimization point of view. We present approx...

META-HEURISTIC ALGORITHMS FOR MINIMIZING THE NUMBER OF CROSSING OF COMPLETE GRAPHS AND COMPLETE BIPARTITE GRAPHS

The minimum crossing number problem is among the oldest and most fundamental problems arising in the area of automatic graph drawing. In this paper, eight population-based meta-heuristic algorithms are utilized to tackle the minimum crossing number problem for two special types of graphs, namely complete graphs and complete bipartite graphs. A 2-page book drawing representation is employed for ...

Sub-coloring and Hypo-coloring Interval Graphs

In this paper, we study the sub-coloring and hypo-coloring problems on interval graphs. These problems have applications in job scheduling and distributed computing and can be used as “subroutines” for other combinatorial optimization problems. In the sub-coloring problem, given a graph G, we want to partition the vertices of G into minimum number of sub-color classes, where each sub-color clas...

Linear Recognition of Almost Interval Graphs

Give a graph class G and a nonnegative integer k, we use G+kv, G+ke, and G−ke to denote the classes of graphs that can be obtained from some graph in G by adding k vertices, adding k edges, and deleting k edges, respectively. They are called almost (unit) interval graphs if G is the class of (unit) interval graphs. Almost (unit) interval graphs are well motivated from computational biology, whe...

Max Point-Tolerance Graphs

A graph G is a max point-tolerance (MPT) graph if each vertex v of G can be mapped to a pointed-interval (Iv, pv) where Iv is an interval of R and pv ∈ Iv such that uv is an edge of G iff Iu ∩ Iv ⊇ {pu, pv}. MPT graphs model relationships among DNA fragments in genome-wide association studies as well as basic transmission problems in telecommunications. We formally introduce this graph class, c...
